While it has a small form factor screen and keyboard the innards of this device are not quite like the other Intel Atom-based minilaptops. The PC-Z1 has an ARM-based processor and runs a version of the Linux distribution Ubuntu. ther specifications include a 5-inch widescreen LCD Wi-Fi microSDHC card slot and a weight of just 409g. The PC-Z1 is supposed to have a 10-hour battery life and comes with a quick launch feature which lets you check your email in about 3 seconds. It’s not the first time we have come across an ARM-based device running Linux.

This can only be effectively done by visible delivery on promises made and meeting expectations. But many of us cannot tell the difference between pedestrian run-of-the-mill leadership and credible inspired leadership with spine and ubuntu values. r can we? The numbers among us of people that do not give a hoot about who is leading us are dwindling and that has to be a good sign surely. The reason I mention all this stems from an offer made by Ubuntu head honcho Mark Shuttleworth to put some of his staff to work on the Debian distro to help Debian developers get ready for a proposed code freeze in December. Underlying this is a desire on Shuttleworth’s part to get as many distros release cycles as possible “in sync” which would Shuttleworth believes benefit the entire Linux community &#151 from the distros themselves to upstream developers and end users.

Armed with my faithful MacBook an internet connection and a 2GB USB flash disk; I set out on an adventure to bring my daughter?s future netbook alive. Deciding on the SIt didn?t take long for me to decide to install Ubuntu on the netbook. Free would be the first reason and familiarity is the second. I?ve tried Ubuntu before and I have the installation CD with me. As naive as it sounds some people still think that you can just copy and paste the content of the CD to the USB drive and boot the machine with it. That?s why my first quest is to find out how to transfer the installation ability of the CD to USB as a portable Ubuntu installer – the Mac way of course.

I switched the Linux half of my home desktop PC to Ubuntu four years ago and my media center followed this year as I said goodbye finally to the venerable Windows XP. The growing dominance of Ubuntu (at least on the desktop the server room seems to have been won by Red Hat) has delivered the Linux community a serious advantage in its ongoing war against the incumbent Windows and Apple platforms because of its ability to give software developers a single platform to concentrate on and polish to a degree not seen previously. In this context Google’s decision to create its own Linux distribution and splinter the Linux community decisively once again can only be seen as foolhardy and self-obsessive. Instead of treading its own path Google should have sought to leverage the stellar work already carried out by Shuttleworth and his band of merry coders and tied its horse to the Ubuntu cart. If Google truly wants to design a new “windowing system on top of a Linux kernel” there should be nothing to stop the search giant from collaborating openly with the best in the business.

The poem with which I opened this entry refers to a central concept of the program this year “Ubuntu” a theological concept promoted by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and adopted by The Episcopal Church for the theme of its 73rd General Convention this summer. Ubuntu has a range of definitions: I am because we are; I in you and you in me; what heals you heals me and what harms you harms me.
