Napa the city undergoes a spirited revival

The Westin luxurious enough in its own right is a well-situated anchor for now especially with chef Ken Frank’s La Toque relocated from Rutherford on the premises. La Toque earned a Michelin star in its previous location and will presumably reclaim it in 2009 with Frank’s inspired prix fixe menu ($49-$88) and an encyclopedic wine list featuring treasures from the neighborhood plus all the First Growths from Bordeaux. Across the Napa River now far less flood prone because its banks have been shored up and all the major bridges raised is Ubuntu with a groundbreaking vegetarian menu that will astonish and delight even the most unrepentant carnivore. Chef Jeremy Fox happens to be one of those but he embraced the challenge and masterfully created a James Beard Award national semifinalist in the best-new-restaurant category. There’s nary a lump of tofu to be found in this warm inviting space housed in a beautifully restored stone building on Main Street and populated by hyper-friendly young servers. But there are pizzas slathered in organic sauerkraut; and the cornucopia of veggies is grown in the restaurant’s own biodynamic plot tended to by famed Napa gardener Jeff Dawson. A warning though: The lavender-dusted almonds offered while you contemplate dinner are so addictive that Fox’s menu is ever in danger of becoming an afterthought.
