They’ve emerged as a third Linux distribution to have commercial market momentum on a worldwide basis. Prior to Ubuntu, the distribution landscape consisted of commercial and community-supported versions from Red Hat and Novell’s Suse–together with some regional and “flavor of the month” distros.

Ubuntu’s community manager, Jono Bacon, says that “Ubuntu Open Week is a week of IRC tuition and Q+A sessions all about getting involved in the rock-and-roll world that is the Ubuntu community. We organise this week for the beginning of a new release cycle to help new contributors get involved. Its going to be a fun week!”Ubuntu Open Week happens from Monday 3 Nov – Friday 7 Nov and takes place in #ubuntu-classroom on the Freenode IRC network. Users can use a program such as XChat-GNOME in Ubuntu to connect and get involved.

Just like Debian is already doing as a community distro. It is too bad that there have been some friction between the Ubuntu and Debian communities as the two communities are so close to each other. Debian is great in itself too, but in those fields where it has been weaker, Ubuntu has come to help, quite successfully too.
