Now, Sun wants to build stronger ties with another open source player, one that might be even more visible and politically advantageous: Ubuntu. Sun’s getting ready to provide support for the server flavor of Ubuntu on its small-to-midsize server hardware, in conjunction with Canonical. Its existing Linux lineups include Red Hat Enterprise and SUSE, two well-established server players, with Ubuntu Server as the newest addition.

His group is meeting with top PC makers next week in Austin,Texas, in hopes of accelerating their efforts to sell Linuxmachines. The top PC makers have so far treaded carefully. Dell’s websitesells Ubuntu computers in a separate section for open-source PCs,out of direct comparison with Windows machines. Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said the placement reflects thefact that Linux is still not a mainstream consumer product. Linux is partly hampered by its greatest asset: its widelydispersed nature. Linux is a core set of code called a kernel; developers builddifferent layers of software on top of it to serve differentcomputing purposes. (Open-source providers make money by chargingfor add-on services, such as technical support or securityupgrades.

Have not been able to get the HUAWEI working on the Mint box, despite a couple of days of trying; plenty of info out there, but no success. As a last resort I will have to get an ADSL2+ connection I suppose, and forget sharing the Mac internet access…
