Confessing may help collective soul
Atlanta Journal Constitution – Aug 3, 2006
Neil Alexander of Atlanta. “Confession which comes from a healthy desire to be reconciled is healing, ” Allen said. For instance, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu described in the truth commissions convened after apartheid was dismantled in South Africa a theology he called “ubuntu,” the idea that we are people only in relationship to others. He’s saying that what it means to be fully human is to be in community, Allen said. “As persons confess what they have done, it is in confession that we are rejoined with community,” he said. In that sense, confession and relationship have a stronger tie than confession and legal action. If one can recognize that the sin has separated him from his own humanity, then if he can confess it to God and his brothers and sisters, he has the possibility of being forgiven and given a place back in the family of humanity.
Sachs calls for rethink on defamation law
Independent Online – Aug 4, 2006
Sachs said the present law of defamation law tended to drive people further apart. “For one to win, the other must lose, the scorecard measured in a surplus of rands for the victor. He said there was a need for retraction and apology to be introduced into court proceedings – a system based on Ubuntu-botho, which strived to develop restorative systems of justice. At present, apologies were seen as a tactical means of reducing damages rather than a means of clearing the air and restoring mutual respect. “(In this matter) a retraction and apology genuinely offered and generously received could have sorted the matter out once and for all. Instead it has produced a hurt and humiliated loser on the one side, and a winner (who might find it difficult not to gloat) on the other. Sachs noted, however, that damages awards should not completely fall out of the picture.

Memo to self: stop being so old school

(Yes, I can still read the scripts for troubleshooting. ) Less confusing than the big tabbed dialogs for such things in Microsoft Windows, easier to find stuff than in the scripts. So hooray for gnome-power-manager and for the Ubuntu ACPI script developers. I’m thinking about applying the “Do the Simplest Thing that Could Possibly Work” principle to the problem of organizing proposals and articles for a publication. Is just a free-form wiki page sufficient? I doubt it, but nobody uses most of the workflow features of a CMS anyway. I’m thinking the simplest thing that could possibly work is wiki plus “which queue is this in?” (author’s name for drafts, or functions such as copy-edit for queues that could possibly be handled by more than one person) and “deadline date”.
