Independent Online – Jul 7, 2006
On this weekend’s gathering, Molebatsi said it was only the second one to be held on African soil in the movement’s 150-year history. The first was in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, in 1973. What is important is that we will be picking up on the legacy of youth activism and also on South Africa’s work in seeking to get the different groups of people to work together, irrespective of race, religion and gender,” said Molebatsi. He added that as the world was desperate to end all kinds of conflicts, a lot could be learned from the work carried out by the YMCA in different parts of the globe. Besides the role which the movement played in trying to bring people together, the YMCA had also been active in issues pertaining to development. Molebatsi pointed out that during his tenure, the YMCA had signed a number of agreements with the United Nations on development issues.
