City’s new plan to help the homeless
Cape Argus – Cape Argus (subscription) – Jun 20, 2006
It seeks to address the plight of marginalised people living on Cape Town’s streets. The city will use three initiatives to achieve its objectives: the ubuntu, poverty alleviation and leadership initiatives. The ubuntu initiative will create, among other things, sustainable partnerships with all interested parties, establish neighbourhood networks, upgrade Local Networks of Care and focus on parenting training. The poverty alleviation initiative will encourage the use of food gardens and soup kitchens. Leadership programmes will be used to facilitate skills development and the training of mentors. Leadership camps will also be held. Bam told the meeting that the city would act as “an enabler” and would obtain the support of the provincial government, non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations and the private sector.
