Murdock calls for timely Debian releases
The Age – Jun 14, 2005
Apart from the release cycle, Mr Murdock said the Debian projectshould attempt to keep the growing family of Debian derivativesunited around the common core of the distribution. A large number of the Linux distributions in existence are basedon either Red Hat Linux or Debian. Some of the better-known onesbased on Debian are Corel, Stormix (both now defunct), Progeny,Linspire, Xandros, KNOPPIX, LinEx, Skolelinux, MEPIS, andUbuntu. Mr Murdock said in the case of the distributions based on RedHat, many had splintered into different and incompatiblevarieties. However, in the case of the Debian-based derivatives, after allthese years they were still compatible with Debian. “Debian’s popularity as a base distro goes beyond technology. Inmany ways, Debian facilitates the Linux equivalent of ‘Thinkglobally, act locally’,” Mr Murdock said.

More recently, Red Hat has been trying to become a more neutral participant in the project, so more outside developers will be drawn to the effort. Red Hat established the Fedora Foundation earlier this month to give outsiders greater say in running the project and developing the software. Fedora competes with enthusiast projects such as Ubuntu and commercial products such as Novell’s SuSE Linux Professional. As of later this week, Fedora will also be up against Sun Microsystems’ OpenSolaris. Fedora Core 4 was initially expected to be released May 16 but was delayed. Though the software became available for download through Red Hat’s Web site Monday, enthusiasts found they could download it from mirror sites and through the BitTorrent file-sharing service on Saturday. The operating system, based on version 2.
