Inaction over Darfur reflects the collective shame and failure of…
Cape Times – Cape Times (subscription) – Feb 7, 2005
It could be expected that this solidarity of the past, combined with an enduring spirit of struggle in the liberated peoples of Africa, would translate into fierce defence of their fellow Africans whose lives and freedom might be threatened. On the contrary, however, lack of any concerted outrage over Darfur seems to suggest that pursuit of the material benefits of liberation has supplanted the idealism that motivated and sustained the struggle. That the iniquities of colonialism and the apartheid system were mild in comparison with Darfur right now only highlights the tragedy of this failure of ubuntu in the wider African context. And what of the United Nations? That toothless wonder. Its secretary general has wrung his hands over Darfur several times, but this seems not to have had any effect on the decimation of the Darfuris. In view of the impotence of the world body to take timely and effective action in the face of such manifest evil, is it any
wonder that the Americans by-pass it and do what they want?
Will the human community ever be able to define unmitigated evil and devise the means and pay the cost to destroy evil when it arises? Because it seems that rise it will, inevitably. Colin Campbell

However, it’s Linux that lives at the center of most of the open source community, and it’s Linux that includes a complete office suite, a top-notch Web browser, a powerful image and graphics editor, dozens of professional applications, and a solid and time-tested development environment for free, easily downloaded or purchased for just a few dollars. With the Ubuntu Linux installation, the entire OS fits on a single CD-ROM for installation. Yellow Dog requires four, which of course means that it offers considerably more applications and options. One reason I like Ubuntu over Yellow Dog, though, is that Ubuntu defaults to the slick GNOME graphical environment, while Yellow Dog uses KDE, an alternative that’s attractive, but less compelling. Ubuntu also worked just fine with my laptop, never glitched on the graphics, and the audio worked every time… With the Ubuntu Linux installation, the entire OS fits on a single CD-ROM for installation. In the posting, developer Bill Nottingham said the company might also shift more software from the Red Hat-controlled Fedora Core to the Fedora Extras software that the company hopes outside programmers will maintain. Red Hat’s product is filled with open-source software packages, but the company is trying to lure more programmers into the fold with its Fedora project. The effort faces competition not just from other Linux versions such as.
