My most recent problem has been WMP not playing my new DVD which I picked up from JB Hifi at an amazing price today. This has lead me into deciding to use Linux. In the past I have dabbled with Mandrake(now Mandriva) and Ubuntu so I have a rough idea on how Linux works overall. My brother has recently been using Ubuntu on his laptop and I am pleased to say that he is considering making the permenant change from Windows to Linux. I was shocked today that he even started messing around with some Command Line stuff and got somethings working. So here is my plan, the PC I am currently using will be using Windows MCE after I get my laptop and will act as a multimedia hub and a backup system for my brother and I while my Mum can record TV to the PC. I am planning of using Fedora Core 5 on my new laptop and then hopefully networking Windows MCE, my brothers Ubuntu Laptop and my laptop together wirelessly… This has lead me into deciding to use Linux. I would really love to use the Multimedia features from Windows MCE throughout the network but I am not sure to what extend I can do this.

And, I wanted to play both QuicktimeMovies and Windows Media but I had to go through a lot to install the MPlayerfree software. So, I began the search for the idiot-proof Linux distributionthat a newbie like me could use. After trying out Mandrake, Fedora Core 3, Ubuntu (which really was easier thana lot of others), I finally settled on SimplyMepis. The trying out process wassimply a matter of getting the CD ISOs from the web. You "burn" the CD thenrestart your computer. Whichever distribution of Linux (e… Mepis) takes overfrom that point and asks you questions on what to do. Depending on whichdistribution, or "distro" for short, you get, the harder the questions. Ubuntuand SimplyMepis were the easiest installations. Mepis was incredible. Wow! It came with everything, including CD-burningsoftware that exceeds programs like Nero. It also had EVERYTHING pre-loaded. Best of all, SimplyMepis came on a single CD-ROM–as opposed to 3-4 CDs–knownas a "live CD.

This leads me on to my next exciting point. I am actually not running Windows on this machine but rather Linux. In particular a distrobution called Kubuntu which is essentially the popular Ubuntu distrobution but with KDE as a desktop environment which I prefer. I am still configuring a lot of stuff and it is going to take ages for me to get it up and running as there is a lot of stuff to move and setup. After having a good look around Kubuntu I am considering not using my old favorite browser Opera and instead opting for Konqueror. Currently at school it is a few weeks from exams so I am revising a lot.
