The ‘Ubuntu’ of Globalization
Common Dreams – Common Dreams (press release) – Jul 12, 2004
dwt” –>The ‘Ubuntu’ of GlobalizationPublished on Monday, July 12, 2004 by the. It is a shortened version of a South African saying that comes from the Xhosa culture: “Umuntu ngumuntu ngamuntu. ” This means that I am a person through other people. It means that my humanity is tied to yours. This is probably the single most important aspect of living in a highly connected planet: Our humanity is tied together.

Getting in shape the African way
Cape Argus – Cape Argus (subscription) – Jun 7, 2004
Now a group of energetic young entertainers have come up with the perfect way to have fun, keep fit, enjoy a play and keep warm, instead of all that lazing about. Sizwe Maqina, Bandile Ngudle and a number of performers from the Ubuntu Production House can be found hosting a range of activities and plays at the Two Oceans Craft and Culture Centre in Masiphumelele, Noordhoek every Saturday until the end of July. If the thought of doing an aerobics class makes you cringe and reach for the cookie jar, then their “Afrobics” session is one you will definitely want to be part of. Afrobics is a fun “African” take on a traditional aerobics class – but minus the mindless techno music, and the jumping and hopping around like a headless chicken. Instead, the background music is replaced by the energising sounds of the African drum, and you’ll be taught traditional African dance steps. The hour-long session takes place between 11am to noon… Take along your own snacks, but there is a shop that sells coffee and cooldrinks. Maqina founded Ubuntu two years ago. He describes it as an arts and cultural development project which aims to help keep youth who live in the Masiphumelele area off the streets. “Too many children don’t do any activities after school or during the school holidays. They just hang out on the streets. “So I started Ubuntu so they would have something to do,” he says.

Sanlam adds muscle to its board of directors
Business Report – Jun 3, 2004
Ramos is also non-executive director of the Financial Markets Advisory Board and a director of the Development Bank of Southern Africa. The appointments, which follow an investigation into the board’s composition, bring to 18 the number of directors on Sanlam’s board. Other recent new board appointments include deputy chairman Patrice Motsepe, the chief executive of the Ubuntu-Botho empowerment consortium, which has taken a 10 percent stake in Sanlam, and two of the consortium’s other directors, Rejoice Simelane and Bernard Swanepoel. They were re-elected yesterday. Ton Vosloo, who retired at the AGM yesterday, became chairman in January 2000 following the death of former chairman Marinus Daling. The board changes follow a tumultuous year at Sanlam that started with the appointment of a new chief executive, Johan van Zyl, who embarked on a strategy to stabilise the business that involved a cost cutting exercise, improvement of investment performance, a co-operation agreement with Absa, the restructuring of Gensec Bank and Sanlam International, and the finalisation of the Ubuntu-Botho empowerment deal.

I imagine anything less than 3GHz would chug a bit trying to do anything useful, but I could be wrong. A fascinating technology, personally more interesting for how it’s done (seamless realtime runtime integration) rather than what it accomplishes, but it has it’s uses. If you don’t know much about OS design implementation you’ll just go "huh, that’s neat"; however, others will be flabbergasted at the unbelievable simplicity of it’s current form. I tried to do such things in the ’80’s (just for fun), but the tech just wasn’t up to it then (on the PC level) so I just ripped apart a VAX in my head instead, and became confuzzeled beyond comprehension by concurrent programming.

It proceeded on the principle that both the victims and the
perpetrators who came before the Commission were victims. The most important principle of the TRC was recognition of the humanity
of the other without racial, religious or economic distinctions. It
reiterated the African concept of Ubuntu (recognition of the intertwined
humanity of all people and the co-existence of people as a community)
which loosely can be verbalized as ‘That you are because I am, and I am
because you are’. Some people may feel that in the quest for freedom and democracy and an
end to large-scale political violence in South Africa, Justice was traded
for truth and peace. For many South Africans, this was the price that we
had to willingly pay for freedom. The leadership of democratic South
Africa has continued to foster and nurture the concept of UBUNTU, of
negotiation, of reconciliation and of compromise. The attempts at reconciliation and compromise include the negotiation
of a national anthem which has portions of the apartheid anthem, the
designing of a new flag with components of the previous flag, the
recognition of eleven official langauges, the amalgamation of the
apartheid army and the military wing of the ANC, negotiations with the
Inkatha Freedom Party which was pushing for federalism and which raised
the possibility of more ethnic violence, the acceptance of whites as
citizens of South Africa, and the acknowledgement of the role of some
whites in the struggle who had made a moral choice not to reap the
benefits of silence and compromise.

I think it’s more of a Linux or driver problem, that’s why I’m posting here instead of in the gaming forum. I’ve already posted in the Ubuntu forums (you can find my first post.

What’s the Best OS For My Parents?

ubuntu is very easy to install and a friend of mine who uses it thinks it is good and it looks good to. when i tried to install suse it didn’t set up the user account and i ended up booting up onto the shell envoronment with no way to get in so in my opinion avoid this one. the choice is yours to make also you will probably need a new modem as the one in your perents pc is likely to be a winmodem or a softmodem linux is not compatible with these.
