Getting in shape the African way
Cape Argus – Cape Argus (subscription) – Jun 7, 2004
Now a group of energetic young entertainers have come up with the perfect way to have fun, keep fit, enjoy a play and keep warm, instead of all that lazing about. Sizwe Maqina, Bandile Ngudle and a number of performers from the Ubuntu Production House can be found hosting a range of activities and plays at the Two Oceans Craft and Culture Centre in Masiphumelele, Noordhoek every Saturday until the end of July. If the thought of doing an aerobics class makes you cringe and reach for the cookie jar, then their “Afrobics” session is one you will definitely want to be part of. Afrobics is a fun “African” take on a traditional aerobics class – but minus the mindless techno music, and the jumping and hopping around like a headless chicken. Instead, the background music is replaced by the energising sounds of the African drum, and you’ll be taught traditional African dance steps. The hour-long session takes place between 11am to noon… Take along your own snacks, but there is a shop that sells coffee and cooldrinks. Maqina founded Ubuntu two years ago. He describes it as an arts and cultural development project which aims to help keep youth who live in the Masiphumelele area off the streets. “Too many children don’t do any activities after school or during the school holidays. They just hang out on the streets. “So I started Ubuntu so they would have something to do,” he says.

Sanlam adds muscle to its board of directors
Business Report – Jun 3, 2004
Ramos is also non-executive director of the Financial Markets Advisory Board and a director of the Development Bank of Southern Africa. The appointments, which follow an investigation into the board’s composition, bring to 18 the number of directors on Sanlam’s board. Other recent new board appointments include deputy chairman Patrice Motsepe, the chief executive of the Ubuntu-Botho empowerment consortium, which has taken a 10 percent stake in Sanlam, and two of the consortium’s other directors, Rejoice Simelane and Bernard Swanepoel. They were re-elected yesterday. Ton Vosloo, who retired at the AGM yesterday, became chairman in January 2000 following the death of former chairman Marinus Daling. The board changes follow a tumultuous year at Sanlam that started with the appointment of a new chief executive, Johan van Zyl, who embarked on a strategy to stabilise the business that involved a cost cutting exercise, improvement of investment performance, a co-operation agreement with Absa, the restructuring of Gensec Bank and Sanlam International, and the finalisation of the Ubuntu-Botho empowerment deal.

‘Does Xolani’s death show we don’t care?’
Independent Online – May 28, 2004
At the funeral service, relatives and their neighbours sat listening quietly while speaker after speaker condemned the way people treat children living on city streets. Others hid behind sunglasses to avoid showing their tears. The Reverend Themba Mntambo, who conducted the service, preached about care, society’s responsibility to children and ubuntu. “Is Siyabonga’s (Xolani’s) death an indication that we’ve stopped caring?” he asked. “We need to embrace one another and remove the labels placed on people. When you mention the word street children, people automatically think, ‘My car will be stolen or my bag will be snatched. ‘ We need to move away from that.
